The Native Plant Breeding Initiative is a student-led effort at the University of Florida dedicated to exploring the potential of native and underutilized plants through fieldwork, research, and community science. We focus on the pre-breeding, conservation, and characterization of native species and crop wild relatives to support long-term resilience in our ecosystems and agricultural systems.

Our
Mission

Hands-On Plant Breeding Experience

Our mission is to empower the next generation of plant breeders through innovative education and hands-on experience. By offering opportunities in plant collection, characterization, and early-stage breeding, we equip students with the hard and soft skills needed to address global food and fiber insecurity. Our goal is to ensure future breeders are prepared to meet the demands of a changing environment—and to begin that work right here at home.

Current Focus: Native Ipomoea in the Southeast

Our current focus includes several native Ipomoea species found across the Southeastern U.S., including Ipomoea hederifolia, I. cordatotriloba, I. indica, and I. pandurata. These species offer promising traits for neodomestication, such as stress tolerance, perenniality, and unique nutritional profiles. We’re actively monitoring wild populations, organizing collection trips, and building a germplasm base for future breeding work.
